Hello, Commanders!

Today we'll investigate the ups, downs and everything in between regarding the Vertigo Bomber. Not too often is the Vertigo seen in online play, but it can be the perfect weapon of choice in some situations. Keep in mind of course that there is always a right time and a wrong time for any unit, and the Vertigo is not one that you want to use at the wrong time, as it comes at a steep price.

IPB Image

First off, the Vertigo a pricey unit costing 1800 credits. That means suicide runs are not the best idea as you're probably going to be doing more harm to yourself than to your opponent. The Vertigo almost rivals the Firehawk when it comes to bombing structures, but its true strength lies in attacking vehicles. (That's because the Vertigo bomb deals 3000 cannon damage, while each of the Firehawk's two bombs deal 1500 grenade damage, as you can check with the Tiberium Wars damage guide.) The Vertigo Bomber is available toNod and its subfaction Marked of Kane at tier 3 and has a deadly payload that can destroy light units like Pitbulls, APCs, Seekers or Scorpion Tanks with a single bomb.

Listed below are the numbers of Vertigoes that are required to destroy important structures:
  • Power Plant/Space Command Uplink/Tiberium Chemical Plant/Signal Transmitter: 2
  • Refinery/Extractor: 5
  • War Factory/Warp Sphere: 5
  • Command Centre/Nerve Centre/Operations Centre: 3
  • Tech Centre/Tech Lab/Technology Assembler: 5
The downside to the Vertigo is it has a very long reload time, and it is very easily killed by the right counters, so be sure to take care of your bombers and use their stealth to the fullest by going where there isn't stealth detection or much anti-air. Strike the enemy where they don't expect it.

On a plus side, the Vertigo isn't often used, so it can catch your enemy off guard. Just make sure to place your Air Tower somewhere remote like in the back of your base where your opponent won't see it easily.

A good idea is to build either two or four Vertigoes and group them in pairs. This way you can easily micro your bombers to pick off Harvesters, Juggernauts or Tanks. Always try to be unpredictable in where you attack to make your opponent overspend in stealth detection and anti-air. If they invest too much on that, you can simply cruise around the map and pick off any stray units or unprotected buildings.

Vertigoes have a large splash damage radius, which allows for some creativity: If you have the skill, you can lead up a shot or force-fire on the ground between two units to get the most value from your payload, and all you need are two Vertigoes to take out a group of clumped Harvesters or Juggernauts.

Listed below are the number of Vertigoes required to destroy certain units:
  • Power Plant: 2
  • Scorpion Tank/Seeker/Shardwalker/APC/Pitbull/Specter: 1
  • Predator Tank/Devourer Tank/Harvester (any except for Shielded Harvester)/Juggernaut: 2
  • Unshielded Tripod/Shielded Harvester: 3
  • Avatar/Shielded Tripod/Mammoth Tank: 4
Another feature of the Vertigo is its rear anti-air machine gun. It's a relatively weak weapon, but it can serve its purpose on occasions. It can be just the thing that wards off those pesky Orcas trying to kill your Harvesters, and it can tip the tide of battle where you are being bombed by long-range Devastator Warships.

Boom baby!

The Vertigo Bomber has one upgradable feature, the Stealth Pod. The upgrade is cheap, costing only 500 credits from your Air Tower, and each Pod costs 300 per use. The Pod lasts for 1.5 minutes and will stealth anything friendly in its vicinity.

The Stealth Pod can be dropped on tanks or buildings allowing for some really sneaky tricks. You can stealth a Reckoner and drive around wreaking havoc with Saboteurs or a Commando for a much lower the price than a cloaking field. Also, due to the Pod stealthing nearby units, your Engineer won't be seen slipping into the enemy building. *evil laugh*

In the right circumstances an Air Support Tower could be just the thing to save you 6400 credits worth of bombers. When your Vertigo sets down after a bombing run it will refuse to take off again until it has reloaded. Any good player will exploit this and destroy your bombers while they're on the deck. If they attempt this and you have already prepared ahead of time with a Support Tower, then you can simply retreat your Vertigoes there and they will do so, regardless whether they have reloaded or not. Please note that you need to order your Vertigoes to the Air Support Tower before they start the landing sequence; once Vertigoes have landed, they won't lift off until they have reloaded their ammo.

Storming blindly into an enemy's base will not get you very far by any means, and the likelihood of escaping alive is slim (assuming your opponent has the slightest idea of what they're is doing). The first thing you will want to do is scout your the base to locate where and how many anti-air defences there are. This includes both static and moving defences (turrets and units). Static defences are obviously your biggest concern as you know that they aren't going anywhere. So, discover their positions, plan an attack route and go for it. Be sure to control your Vertigoes on the trip home as well, because if you allow them to return home by themselves, they will take the shortest path, which in almost every case is a path of doom.

In summary

  • Vertigoes are expensive but can pay off very well if micromanaged properly.
  • They take long to reload, so send them on another bombing run as soon as they have rearmed.
  • Be unpredictable with your attacks and give yourself the psychological edge by doing so.
  • Vertigoes are great for destroying Harvesters and artillery and serve well as support.
  • Vertigoes are a good unit choice for catching your enemy off guard, and they also provide the very underused but very sneaky Stealth Pods.
  • Group your Vertigo Bombers in groups of two to allow for easier management.
  • Build an Air Support Tower somewhere away from your main Air Tower if the enemy has spotted your main Air Tower and if you suspect they will destroy it with your bombers still on deck.
Keep these points in mind when using the Vertigo bomber and cause the most bang for your buck!

Good luck, commander, we'll see you on the battlefield!

It’s official…League of Legends has dethroned World of Warcraft as Most Played PC Game In The World

LoL eased in under the radar about three years ago and barely made a splash in the casual gaming scene at the time. One of many of the “MOBA” or Multiplayer Online Battle Arena games that spawned off of Warcraft III and Defense of the Ancients, the game has gone above and beyond all of its competitors and totes a following of about 70 million registered accounts.

League of Legends acquired the prodigious title earlier this year when DLC Intelligence, a market research and consulting firm in conjunction with Xfire, gave out its annual playtimes of more than 21 million Xfire users. While the statistics didn’t cover every single gamer in the whole world, the statistics have been known to be an accurate instrument to judge the gaming world’s interests and has astounding results…

Hours played
League of Legends1,292,502,456
World of Warcraft622,378,909
Minecraft371,635,651
Heroes of Newerth184,520,156
Diablo III172,907,605
Battlefield 3171,852,550
MapleStory165,503,651
StarCraft II163,980,293
World Of Tanks145,702,931
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3126,754,082

It seems that the winds have shifted in the favor of more casual online games that we can pick up and play, rather than the life consuming monoliths like World of Warcraft. The director of DLC Intelligence himself was astounded by the results the company had shown.

QUOTE
The fact that online games such League of Legends eclipsed more than a billion hours of online game time in a year is simply incredible and a testament to the fundamental shift currently sweeping through the games industry. By comparison, Bungie recently announced that the Halo franchise surpassed two billion hours of online play, but that’s over a period of seven years.

David Cole, CEO of DFC Intelligence.

With the increasing push for competition in League of Legends by Riot and the ever increasing fanbase, it seems that the game plans to keep its throne for years to come.

Available only for the next 38 hours (from this posting) the Dawn of War franchise is on sale for a measly $10 USD. This includes all of DoW 1, DoW 2, and all the download content for DoW 2. This is a great time for those of you who have never played any DoW games before and have been waiting for an insanely cheap sale to get in and try it out. Even if multiplayer isn't your cup of tea you will have about 100 hours of campaign to plow through from the seven games in this franchise.

Each year, the Steam store tries to remind us how fun it is to buy a dozen new video games for a price that would get you a single game at any other time of year, and they usually succeed. The 2012 holiday season has proven no exception, with severe discounts on dozens of very popular titles and more publisher packs than they've had in previous seasons, with bundle prices ranging from "a good deal" to "ludicrously cheap." Steam is also giving us specific deals which rotate daily.

Attempting to describe what they're offering in full would be an exercise in futility, but in case you need some persuasion to go check out the sale pages, here are some of the details. As of this writing, the entire Prince of Persia, Hitman, Borderlands, Darksiders, Left 4 Dead, Counter-Strike, and Tomb Raider franchises are all listed at 50-75% off, as are Fable III, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Wargame: European Escalation, Natural Selection 2, Civilization V, The Witcher 2, Assassin's Creed III and a couple dozen other games. There are also more games marked anywhere from 10-45% off retail price than I could feasibly list here.

The real insanity is in the publisher packs. Available right now are packs from THQSquare EnixUbisoft2KBethesdaSega, andValve, in addition to the Indie Super Mega Pack. Most of these packs are selling for $50-90 USD, a massive discount over buying all the games individually. The THQ pack, for instance, is the cheapest one available at the moment with a price of $25, yet contains over $200 worth of games.

Whether you're looking to expand your own collection or find a last-minute holiday gift, these deals are worth checking out.

In a move that many of us have been expecting for some time, one of the better-known names in video game publishing and development, THQ Inc., filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Wednesday. The filing essentially puts THQ in its entirety up for sale at auction, provided a purchaser is willing to acquire not just the company but also its existing debts. Part of the documentation for the court records included a detailed listing of each of THQ's products, including their upcoming list of games for the next few years, as well as those games' estimated release dates and expected sales information.

The games specifically mentioned by THQ include the following:
  • Saints Row 4, by Volition
  • Company of Heroes 2, by Relic Entertainment
  • Homefront 2, by Crytek UK
  • Darksiders 2, by Vigil Games
  • WWE '13, by Yuke's
  • WWE '14, by Yuke's
  • Metro: Last Light, by 4A Games
  • South Park: The Stick of Truth, by Obsidian Entertainment
  • Evolve, by Turtle Rock Studios
  • 1666, by THQ Montreal
  • Atlas, by Relic Entertainment
  • Crawler, by Vigil Games
While specific release dates were not explicitly mentioned, also included in the documents were charts indicating the rough allocation of each game's resources over the next few years, from which we can deduce when those games are expected to be near completion. 1666, for example, has over 30% of its total current budget allocated as far out as 2015, meaning we likely won't see the game until then. Homefront 2, Evolve, Saints Row 4 and WWE '14 all appear geared for a 2014 release (which we should hope for WWE '14, after all), while South Park, Metro: Last Light and others are heavily invested in 2013. Company of Heroes 2 has an oddly high amount of its budget allocated as far out as 2015, given its expected release in the first quarter of next year. However, this is likely an indication of Relic Entertainment's expected DLC support for the game, which not all titles will have.

The initial offer for purchase came from Clearwater Capital Group, for a total of $60,000,000 USD. However, there is no guarantee that such a purchase will take place; a company must simply provide a potential buyer and bid while filing for Chapter 11 protection. If the court approves the filing, THQ will then be put up for public auction. The general reaction of potential buyers indicates that there is no desire to break THQ apart and buy its components, but rather that it is worth more to them as a single entity. The market value of the company at the end of the trading day on Tuesday was only $11.5 million dollars, yet prospective bids have been dramatically higher than that.

Despite currently being well over one hundred million dollars in debt, THQ has stated that they currently do not intend to lay off any of their current staff. As any Relic fan can attest, this is very reassuring news after the mass lay-offs last February decimated the Vancouver studio and crippled support for the Dawn of War franchise. THQ currently also claims that the Chapter 11 filing will not cause further delays in its game development. In the words of THQ CEO Brian Farrell, "The sale and filing are necessary next steps to complete THQ’s transformation and position the company for the future, as we remain confident in our existing pipeline of games, the strength of our studios and THQ’s deep bench of talent."
